Research and development, prototyping and low volume manufacturing are performed at Elphel facility. High volume production and all PCB assembly is performed at our local manufacturing partner - Newonics Newonics Inc. - an ISO 9001 certified facility also located in Salt Lake City. In partnership with Newonics we provided cameras for Google Books and Google Street View projects, several US National Laboratories, NASA and military contractors.

Every camera performs a set of tests to ensure flawless operation (FPGA tests, memory read/write tests, testing all peripherals image sensor test pattern verification, etc.). After it successfully completed a 24h "stress test" it is packaged and ready for shipping.

Elphel developed and built a large 7.0m × 3.0m custom camera calibration pattern (Figure 10) with programmable laser pointers for absolute pattern cells matching. The pattern cells coordinates are measured in 3D to 0.1 mm, this data is updated with the cameras bundle adjustment to compensate for building walls deformation. This setup is used for measurements of the camera lenses, 5 DoF lens adjustment during camera manufacturing and calibration of the finished cameras (extrinsic and distortion parameters, optical PSF) to deep subpixel resolution - reprojection error for the 26-lens camera is under 0.05 pixels.
